How to renew your Social Rate with Energía XXI

The Social Rate is renewed automatically.

What is the Social Rate?

The Social Rate for electricity is an aid for people who, having requested it, meet the regulatory requirements. The discount applied to their bill will depend on the degree of vulnerability.

What are these requirements?

  • They need to have contracted the voluntary price for the small consumer (PVPC) in their habitual residence, with a contracted power less than or equal to 10 kilowatts.
  • They should comply with the established personal, family and income requirements.

When must I renew my Social Rate?

The renewal takes place every two years of application, except if you are officially a large family, in which case you will need to renew when your large family registration expires.

Energía XXI will remind you of the expiry date for your Social Rate on each invoice so you always know when it needs to be renewed. You can check the status of your application here.

On 31 March Royal Decree Law 6/2022 came into force, which modified Royal Decree 897/2017, establishing an automatic renewal of the Social Rate under the following two circumstances:

1. If you were already a beneficiary of the Social Rate before March 31, 2022

  • You have the right to receive the Social Rate until it matures.
  • That is when we will check whether you still meet the requirements and if you are not in the large family group, you will automatically receive the Social Rate for two additional years.
  • Two months before your next bonus expires, we will notify you so that you can present us with an application and the supporting documentation. If you meet the new requirements (in force since March 31, 2022), you will be able to benefit from the Social Rate. From that moment on, we will renew it automatically every two years, as long as you continue to meet the requirements.
  • You can request the application of the Social Rate under the new conditions at any time and it will automatically be renewed every 2 years indefinitely, provided that the requirements included in the applicable regulations are met.

2. Beneficiaries of the Social Rate from March 31, 2022

  • The beneficiaries of the Social Rate who requested it from March 31, 2022 under the new conditions established by RDL 6/2022, will have access to the automatic renewal of their bonus after two years (except for large families).
  • For this to happen, two months before expiry we will check to see if you meet the requirements and we will inform you of the renewal date on the following invoice (if you continue to be a beneficiary) or the expiry (if you no longer meet the requirements).

What discount am I entitled to when I apply for the Social Rate?

The Social Rate discounts are:

  • 25% for vulnerable consumers who meet the established requirements. The discount in this case has been increased to 65% until June 30, 2024.
  • 40% for severely vulnerable consumers who meet the established requirements. In this case the discount has been increased to 80% until June 30, 2024.
  • Furthermore, if you are a consumer at risk of social exclusion because you are being cared for by the social services provided by a regional or local authority that pays at least 50% of your bill, you will not have to pay your electricity bill and, in the event of a temporary inability to pay, your electricity supply cannot be interrupted.
